Whatsapp Contact Sync

Overview

WhatsApp Contact Sync is a simple web app that allows users to sync their profile pictures from WhatsApp to Google Contacts. It matches contacts based on their phone numbers and utilizes whatsapp-web.js and Google People API to update the profile picture in Google Contacts. The app was developed to address the issue of contacts appearing as colorful circles with single letters in them instead of displaying their WhatsApp profile pictures.

Installation

To run the app locally, follow these steps:

1. Create an OAuth client id and secret + an API key from Google for the backend functionality.
2. Create the file server/.env and set the following environment variables:
   • GOOGLE_CLIENT_ID
   • GOOGLE_CLIENT_SECRET
3. Update the CLIENT_ID and API_KEY variables in web/src/pages/GoogleAuth.vue.
4. Build the Docker images:
   • Dockerfile: contains both the backend and web app
   • Dockerfile: contains only the web app
   • Dockerfile: contains only the backend
5. Run the following commands to build and run the complete app:

   docker build -t whatsapp-contact-sync .
   docker run -p 3000:3000 -d whatsapp-contact-sync
